Owner Notification Letter
Dear Shark Helmet Owner:
Shark S.A.S. has decided that certain Shark RAW Helmets in size Medium and Extra Large fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 218. Pursuant to 49 CFR 577.5(d) Shark has determined that this non-compliance may not exist in each Shark RAW Helmet, however, some Shark RAW Helmets that were tested failed to conform with the above standard, and a recall is being conducted accordingly.
SHARK has decided to recall the following SHARK RAW DOT helmets in sizes M & XL. Serial numbers are sewn on the chin strap label of the helmets. Serial numbers for the recalled products fall within one of the following ranges:
050418/J-035343 to 050418/J-045065
DOT/X64-004061 to DOT/X64-007110
FMVSS No. 218 states that “when an impact attenuation test is conducted in accordance with Section 7.1, acceleration in excess of 200g shall not exceed a cumulative duration of 2.0 milliseconds.” Shark has received test results showing that several samples of Shark RAW size M helmets showed accelerations at the above described levels that exceeded the duration permitted by the test standards by 0.1 millisecond, 0.3 millisecond and 0.4 millisecond. Two samples of Shark RAW size XL helmets showed accelerations at the above described levels that exceeded the duration permitted by the test standards by 0.16 and 0.08 milliseconds.
Owners of these helmets must stop using the helmets and return them for a replacement. Please call SHARK North America at 1-773-850-3113 for instructions on how to return your helmet.
You will receive a replacement SHARK DRAK (new name of the SHARK RAW) helmet in the same size that is compliant with the FMVSS standards.
If after having attempted to take advantage of this recall you believe you have not been able to have your Shark helmet replaced or returned for a refund within a reasonable time, you may submit a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20590 or call the toll free vehicle safety hotline at 1-800-327-4236 (TTY:1-800-424-9153) or go to http://www.safecar.gov
